5 Tips and 5 Herbs For Staying Healthy This Winter

No one likes getting sick, especially not during the holiday season. We’ve listed out our top 5 tips for staying healthy over the winter along with some safe and effective herbs to try. Click on each herb below to learn more about its health benefits according to researchers.
Tip #1: Avoid winter’s most common illnesses
The holiday season is also (unfortunately) the favorite season for colds, flu, pneumonia, and respiratory infections. No one enjoys getting nasal congestion, sore throats, coughs and headaches and certainly not at this time of the year. To minimize your chances of getting sick, remember to wash your hands as often as possible, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, fit some exercise into your schedule, and stay hydrated and well rested.
Herb to try: echinacea.
Echinacea has antimicrobial and antioxidant properties and helps fight against upper respiratory tract infections such as the cold and the flu. A number of studies have shown the herb helps reduce the risk, duration, and symptom severity of upper respiratory infections.
Tip #2: Don’t let stress and anxiety build up
The holidays are full of love and celebration but when you’re busy with last minute shopping, holiday parties, family gatherings and other activities, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and exhausted. All that stress and anxiety can take a toll on the body, which can lead to mood disorders, impaired cognition, and heart and skin problems. Find ways to relax yourself, such as going for a walk, taking a warm bath, meditating, or drinking some herbal tea.
Herb to try: passionflower.
Passionflower is a potent medicinal herb that has been found to reduce anxiety without causing sleepiness and may be as effective as some prescription medications used to treat anxiety.
Tip #3: Make sure you get enough sleep
Research has shown that sleep deprivation suppresses the immune system, which in turns makes the body more prone to catching colds, the flu, and other illnesses. Sleep deprivation also results in higher levels of stress and anxiety, increased risk of heart disease and cancer, and impaired cognition. It is important that your body gets enough rest and stays strong to fight off diseases. Sleep also helps balance your appetite by regulating hormones, and keeps your hippocampus (an area of the brain involved in memory creation) healthy.
Herb to try: lavender.
The calming aroma of lavender has a sedative effect that some scientists believe may be as effective as some commonly prescribed sleep medications. Teas infused with lavender are currently approved by the German Commission E (equivalent to the FDA in the US) for treating insomnia.
Tip #4: (Try) to eat healthy and in moderation
There’s a reason why New Year resolutions exist - it’s not easy to eat healthy over the holiday season. (Even the strong minded are going to be tempted to overindulge!) But it’s important to eat healthy and in moderation to avoid getting sick and to minimize the risk of chronic diseases. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and try some tricks, like loading up with a healthy snack before a party to curb your appetite or eating a sugar-free mint when you’re done eating. If you do overeat, it may help to move around or do some yoga poses. Drinking herbal tea or eating a peppermint candy may also help ease the uncomfortable feeling of indigestion.
Herb to try: black seed.
Black seed has anti-inflammatory properties that may help curb your appetite and decrease blood sugar levels, cholesterol, and triglycerides. In addition, black seeds are carminative, which means they aid in digestion and may help decrease gas, bloating and stomach pain.
Tip #5: Stay warm!
During the winter our hands and feet can often feel uncomfortably cold because they are the furthest from the heart which is pumping blood around our body to keep us warm. Cold temperatures makes your lungs and heart work overtime to keep warm blood circulating in your body - this can cause blood pressure to rise, which increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Keep your home heated to at least 64˚F (18˚C), especially if you have reduced mobility, are 65 or over, or have a medical condition. Use a hot water bottle or an electric blanket to preheat the bed but don’t use it together to avoid overheating. If you’re going outside, remember to layer up with warm clothes and stay dry!
Herb to try: ginkgo leaf.
Studies have shown that ginkgo leaf helps improves blood circulation by opening up blood vessels, making blood less sticky and preventing the build-up of fats and cholesterol inside your arteries.

    Hi Adam!

    The consumption of passionflower is generally well tolerated with few reported cases of adverse reactions. Some people may experience side effects such as drowsiness or dizziness. As the herb does have pharmacological properties, it may also interact with certain drugs. For example, it may increase the effects of blood-thinning medications, sedatives, antidepressants, and anti-seizure drugs. Different people will react differently so we always recommend checking in with a qualified healthcare practitioner who has knowledge of your individual circumstances.
